Prominent opposition figures, human rights defenders, and lawyers remain unjustly imprisoned following the Tunisian Court of Cassation’s confirmation on September 3 of their convictions in the politically motivated “conspiracy case”. Since their detention, several defendants have resorted to hunger strikes to protest their arbitrary imprisonment, detention conditions, and restrictions in prison. These include limits on access to books, newspapers, and television channels, and the restrictions on family visits which take place with a glass partition or other physical barrier. Meanwhile, the authorities transferred human rights lawyer Ayachi Hammami from Mornaguia Prison to Monastir Prison in an arbitrary and punitive measure.
Tunisian authorities must immediately quash these unjust convictions and release all those detained solely for exercising their human rights.
