Hanif Pashteen and Noor Ullah Tareen, activists and members of Pashtun Tahafuz Movement, a civil rights movement, were forcibly disappeared as they left a convening organized by the provincial government on November 12, 2025, in Peshawar, north-eastern Pakistan. They were forcibly disappeared alongside five others who were released two months later. The continued disappearance of Hanif Pashteen and Noor Ullah Tareen raises serious concerns regarding their safety and well-being.

The Pakistani authorities must make their whereabouts known and ensure their immediate release.

Hon. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi,

I am concerned about the enforced disappearance of PTM activists Hanif Pashteen and Noor Ullah Tareen, taken into police custody on November 12, 2025 after attending a provincial government convened assembly as community representatives. Their delegation was not allowed to present its views, boycotted the session, and left the premises.

Outside the assembly, police intercepted the delegation; witnesses report the Peshawar Capital City Police Officer ordered seven members, including Pashteen and Tareen, into police vehicles. The five others were released from Attock Jail (Punjab) on January 18, 2026, but Pashteen and Tareen remain disappeared, with their whereabouts undisclosed and no known charges communicated to their families.

Enforced disappearance violates the rights to liberty and a fair trial and raises grave concerns for their safety. Secret detention also heightens the risk of torture or other ill treatment.

Their disappearance appears to form part of a wider crackdown on PTM members, including arbitrary detention and enforced disappearances.

I urge you to ensure their whereabouts are immediately disclosed to their families, that they are protected from torture and other ill treatment, and that they are unconditionally released.
