NICARAGUA: DISAPPEARED AFTER SEEKING INDIGENOUS LEADER’S REMAINS

On May 31, six relatives of Indigenous Miskitu leader Brooklyn Rivera disappeared in Managua after traveling to claim his remains following the government’s confirmation of his death. Their families have received no information about their whereabouts or legal status. 

Brooklyn Rivera, a former National Assembly member and prisoner of conscience, was arbitrarily detained in September 2023. After more than two years in detention and prolonged incommunicado conditions, authorities announced his death in custody on May 31, 2026. The disappearance of his relatives comes amid escalating repression in Nicaragua, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, persecution of critics, and attacks on Indigenous leaders and human rights defenders.

Call on the Nicaraguan authorities to immediately disclose the fate and whereabouts of the six people, provide proof of their life, guarantee their safety, and ensure their immediate release.
