Sylvain Rabetsaroana, a former Malagasy senator and presidential candidate, has been targeted by authorities in a broader post-coup crackdown on former regime figures since October 14, 2025. On March 14, 2026, he was arbitrarily arrested during a dawn raid on his residence in Antananarivo by armed and masked soldiers, gendarmes, and police, and held for two weeks without being informed of the charges. He was subsequently charged with criminal conspiracy, illegal firearms possession (the firearm reportedly planted), and attempting to assassinate the Head of State, and he remains in pretrial detention at Tsiafahy prison in overcrowded conditions with serious health concerns.
The authorities must drop all charges and release him immediately, as his detention appears to be solely for the peaceful exercise of his human rights.
