Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights defender Narges Mohammadi is at grave and immediate risk in Iran. She has faced reprisals for nearly 25 years, including repeated convictions for peaceful activism; in February 2026 she reported receiving a further sentence of seven years and six months and other penalties. Since her arbitrary re-arrest in Mashhad on December 12, 2025, she has been held in Zanjan prison and denied adequate medical care despite serious heart disease and worsening symptoms. She suffered a heart attack on March 24, 2026 and requires urgent specialist treatment in a hospital outside prison in Tehran. Iranian authorities have a documented pattern of delaying or conditioning her access to care, including returning her to prison against medical advice after emergency heart surgery in February 2022 and obstructing hospital transfer again in November 2023.

The life of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights defender Narges Mohammadi is at immediate risk. In Zanjan prison, authorities have denied her timely, specialized care for a serious heart condition.
On March 24, 2026 she suffered a heart attack and was found unconscious, and she was treated only in the prison infirmary despite the need for hospital care. A cardiologist who examined her on March 30 warned that medication given in prison may have contributed and that she remains at risk of another attack. Her family and lawyers report ongoing chest pain, severe deterioration, and a 20 kg weight loss since her December 12, 2025 arrest. The Legal Medical Examiner recommended a one-month medical suspension on April 13, but prosecutors refused temporary release or transfer to Tehran for specialist treatment.
Following her arbitrary arrest in Mashhad on December 12, 2025, she was reportedly beaten, denied adequate care, and later transferred to Zanjan prison without notice after detention by the Ministry of Intelligence. She is held with prisoners convicted of violent offenses and has received multiple sentences totaling over 20 years’ imprisonment and 154 lashes solely for her human rights work.
I acknowledge that on May 10, Iranian authorities temporarily suspended Narges Mohammadi’s sentence and released her on bail. She is now in intensive care in a Tehran hospital. However, I urge you to ensure that Narges continues to receive the ongoing specialized medical care she needs. I also call on you to permanently quash her convictions and sentences.
