City of Miami Beach Passes “Refugees Welcome” Resolution

May 16, 2018

The City of Miami Beach passed a resolution today declaring support for a national effort for the resettlement of refugees. Courtney Levine, member and group coordinator for Amnesty International USA, issued this statement:

“Amnesty International in Miami is invested in welcoming refugees in South Florida as part of our work defending human rights. South Florida has historically welcomed refugees escaping violence and political persecution. It is important to continue this tradition by welcoming resettled refugees into our vibrant multicultural community with open arms.

“By passing resolutions in Miami Beach, and hopefully later in other municipalities throughout Miami-Dade County, we are declaring that our community welcomes refugees resettled here, and that we denounce any misleading messages of fear or hatred surrounding these vulnerable families fleeing the most desperate conditions.”
