Amnesty International USA Applauds Biden’s Executive Order to Strengthen Background Checks and Calls for Further Action

March 14, 2023

Responding to President Biden’s announcement of his executive order to strengthen background checks nationally, Ernest Coverson, AIUSA director, gun violence prevention, said:

“This executive order will help address the gun violence human rights crisis. It will make a difference in the lives of everyday people, and Amnesty International USA applauds this step towards common sense gun measures. But we must also combine this move with congressional action to limit access to firearms, particularly assault weapons, which have been used in so many acts of horrific violence. Weapons of war should never be in the hands of civilians.”

“Amnesty International USA also urges Congress to pass the Assault Weapons Ban and the Break the Cycle of Violence Act to create a national standard in which guns are better regulated  in the United States. The assault weapons ban would make the sale, manufacture, and import of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines or high-capacity ammunition feeding devices illegal. To put the Break the Cycle of Violence Act into law would bring us closer to addressing violence across our country that disproportionately impacts communities of color, women, and children.”
