This month’s Guest Speaker is Cristofer Correia Carballo, a Humphrey fellow from Venezuela. Cristofer will talk about the humanitarian crisis happening in Venezuela now.

Venezuela has been going through an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, producing the biggest exodus of the Western Hemisphere in recent history, accounting for 6 million migrants and refugees that have fled the country in the last 7 years. At the same time, the competitive authoritarianism of Chavez turned out into a hegemonic regime with Maduro. The regime has prosecuted opposition leaders, such as Leopoldo Lopez, who was declared as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International, shut down independent media, fiercely repressed peaceful demonstrations, and more. For those human rights violations, Maduro is being investigated by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, being Venezuela the first country in Latin America formally investigated by this institution.
