Defend Free Expression and Peaceful Protest

Freedom of speech, the right to protest, and freedom of the press are human rights that are essential components of civil society space and crucial to protecting all human rights.

But the Trump administration has launched an aggressive attack on free expression: criminalizing protest, dissent, academic freedom, and debate.

Neutralizing opposition is an authoritarian practice designed to evade accountability for violating rights and breaking the law. And it must be stopped.

Amnesty is fighting to protect freedom of expression by:

• Advocating on behalf of protesters, journalists, and students who have been targeted by the administration for speaking out  
• Supporting student and community organizers with tools and resources 
• Documenting all abuses and exposing threats to freedom of speech and the right to protest. 

To keep President Trump—or anyone—accountable for human rights, we need to protect our ability to speak truth to power and the people and organizations leading the way. And we need your help.

Without sufficient pushback on these authoritarian policies and practices, anything people say or do could be used to punish them.

It is absolutely critical to defend the freedom of expression and freedom of assembly so that people can speak out, dissent, and protect human rights without fear of persecution.
