The authorities arrested Zouhayer Makhlouf on September 4, 2002. He was detained at the Ministry of Interior in the capital Tunis and questioned by the State Security Department after being arrested without warrant and held in incommunicado detention for four days. Both men were released without charge on 8 February; two days after the initial UA had been issued.
