Great News! Journalists Released

The two journalists from newspaper The Destiny, arrested in early November, have been released without charge.

Ngor Garang, The Destiny's editor-in-chief, had been arrested on 1 November when he went to a meeting with the Director General of South Sudan's National Security Services (NSS). A journalist working for The Destiny, Dengdit Ayok was arrested by NSS personnel four days later, at the newspaper's offices.

Both men were released without charge on 18 November, in the city of Juba. Ngor Garang had been beaten, according to local sources. He and Dengdit Ayok are now reunited with their families, and will go for a medical check-up in Juba on 19 November.

It appears that the arrests were in relation to an article that Dengdit Ayok wrote, which criticized the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, for allowing his daughter to marry someone who is not South Sudanese.

No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
