In response to Ohio Governor Ted Strickland’s decision to commute Kevin Keith’s death sentence, Laura Moye, director of Amnesty International USA’s Death Penalty Abolition Campaign, today released the following statement:
“Amnesty International applauds Gov. Strickland for fulfilling his role as the final fail-safe in a system that allows grave injustices to go unnoticed. The governor demonstrated true leadership by carefully analyzing a case mired in persistent and unresolved doubts. It is refreshing to find a head of state who is not afraid to take an unpopular stance in the name of upholding justice. This decision should spur lawmakers across the country to abolish an institution that is far too comfortable with doubt, error and bias.”
