In response to Secretary of State Blinken announcing the atrocity designation for Ethiopia, Kate Hixon, Africa Advocacy Director at Amnesty International USA, said:
“Secretary Blinken’s decision to make public the U.S. atrocity determination is a welcome one that human rights advocates have been calling for. Publicly acknowledging the atrocities committed is essential for breaking the cycle of impunity that has sustained this conflict yet must be followed by further actions”.
“Releasing the atrocity designation is only the first step in the journey to justice and accountability for Ethiopians. It is vital the United States continue to work with the Government of Ethiopia, regional partners and the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia to make sure there is an independent investigation, prosecution and judicial process for crimes committed not just in the conflict in northern Tigray, but across Ethiopia”.
