(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Amnesty International USA is holding a rally outside the Embassy of Thailand in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, June 5, 2014 to protest the country’s military crackdown.
Thailand’s military declared martial law and took over power on May 22nd. Since then, dozens of politicians, activists, journalists, academics and demonstrators have been detained after being arrested without a warrant. Hundreds of others are at risk of arbitrary detention. Reports suggest that a number of those already in detention are being held incommunicado – with no access to lawyers, courts or relatives – in unknown locations.
Authorities are issuing orders and instituting measures violating the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly. The terms of these orders are so broad that they may facilitate the wrongful imprisonment of persons for peaceful acts of dissent. Those arrested face military trials.
