(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — Rachel Ward, U.S. program director for Amnesty International USA, issued the following the statement the day after the Oscars regarding Zero Dark Thirty’s nomination:
“Zero Dark Thirty was nominated for ‘Best Picture,’ not ‘Best Documentary.’ The full truth about U.S. torture has not yet been told.
“That’s why the Senate Intelligence Committee report about the CIA’s treatment of detainees must be released immediately. The report contains new — by some accounts shocking — information about the CIA’s use of torture. But the report may never see the light of day, due to pressure from the CIA and others who want to keep it under wraps.
“The public has the right to know the truth about torture and the U.S. government has an obligation to ensure that no one is ever tortured again. The most important conclusion is that torture is immoral, illegal and never, ever justified.”
