In response to President Trump’s executive order aimed to ban transgender girls and women from competing on sports teams that match their gender identity, Karla Gonzales Garcia, Director, Gender, Sexuality & Identity at Amnesty International USA said the following:
“President Trump’s executive order is yet another cruel attack on transgender people that is very much intended to further stigmatize and discriminate against LGBTQ+ people.
“Transgender people, like everyone else, must be able to realize their human rights so they can fully participate in sports with safety and dignity. The policing of who can and cannot play sports could lead to problematic invasive testing of all athletes.
“Human rights standards must be central to any decisions being made on eligibility rules to avoid the perpetuation of discrimination, harmful treatment and stereotypes.”
