Amnesty International USA Takes to the Skies to Tell Holiday Crowds to Welcome Refugees

July 5, 2017

Planes flying along the waterfronts of New York City and Los Angeles on July 4 urged holiday crowds to call on their members of Congress to support refugees via Amnesty International USA.

The planes towed banners that read “REFUGEES WELCOME! Text AMNESTY to 21333. #NoBanNoWall.”  A prompt asked for the caller’s zip code, and patched them through to the Congressional switchboard.

“The United States has a long history of welcoming refugees,” said Eric Ferrero, deputy executive director with Amnesty International USA. “As we reflect on our values as a country on the 4th of July, we must tell our elected leaders that we stand against discrimination and welcome those seeking safety from war, violence and torture. This ban must be stopped immediately.”

Photos and video of the banner flying by the Statue of Liberty and Santa Monica pier can be found here.
