In response to the Biden administration’s extensions of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine, and Sudan, Amy Fischer, Director of the Refugee and Migrant Rights Program at Amnesty International USA, made the following statement:
“Amnesty International USA welcomes the Biden administration’s decision to extend TPS for Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine, and Sudan, ensuring protection and safety for those communities already in the United States.
“This action by the Biden administration not only recognizes the dire conditions in those countries, it provides a lifeline to Venezuelans, Salvadorans, Ukrainians, and Sudanese living in the U.S. in the face of a mass deportation and detention policy that will surely be enacted by the incoming Trump administration on day one.
“In his final days in office, President Biden must continue to take actions within the full power of his office that protect immigrants and refugee communities and prevent any incoming administration from upending communities and inflicting cruelty on those who arrive to the U.S. to seek safety.”
