(NEW YORK, NY) – Following President Trump’s executive order banning immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries, Amnesty International USA is mobilizing its over one million U.S. grassroots supporters and activists to tell their senators to speak out against the order. Naureen Shah, director of Amnesty International USA’s Security with Human Rights program, released the following statement:

“As of Friday, President Trump has swiftly and single-handedly caused irrevocable damage to the United States’ human rights record. This week at airports across the country, people are coming together to say: No Ban in my name. Senators must now take concrete and immediate action to oppose this ban. Every day they are silent, Trump’s ban gets harder to defeat.

“This travel ban is based on fear-mongering, bigotry and xenophobia that must be rejected. If Congress fails to oppose this swiftly and resolutely, an indecent precedent will be set. Members of Congress have to step up – and step up now – to protect the human rights of the people in communities throughout the U.S. and around the world.”
