Amnesty International USA is deeply alarmed at the U.S. Justice Department’s targeting of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a critically important organization in the civil rights movement of this country.
Time and time again, Amnesty International has documented the efforts of governments across the world to target, silence, and shutter civil society organizations they see as a threat to their power or the ideologies they are trying to advance. And for 65 years, we have worked to protect the rights of individuals to speak out and defend human rights. Today is not different.
At a time of major rollbacks on human rights and racial justice, we must all speak out in support of organizations working to fight hate, discrimination and extremism.
Nonprofit organizations are crucial parts of our social fabric, many advocating for marginalized communities in the U.S. and around the globe and working to ensure everyone can fully enjoy the breadth of our human rights. AIUSA is committed to defending civil society’s ability to do this important work without fear of reprisal.
