Amnesty International Urges Biden Administration to Press For Independent Investigations into Human Rights Abuses in sub-Saharan Africa

January 23, 2023

In response to the killings of Martinez Zogo, a respected Cameroonian journalist, and Thulani Maseko, a prominent human rights defender in eSwatini, as well as the suspicious death of John Williams Ntwali, a leading investigative journalist in Rwanda, Kate Hixon, Africa Advocacy Director at Amnesty International USA, said:

“The deaths of these journalists and activists are heartbreaking for the human rights community in sub-Saharan Africa and independent investigations must be launched. The Biden Administration is failing the human rights community by remaining silent on these killings. If human rights are truly a priority for this Administration, then they must strongly condemn each of these murders and push the respective governments for independent investigations and accountability. The Administration’s underwhelming and inadequate response sends a chilling message to activists across the continent that the United States does not stand behind them.”
