(Concord, NH) — In response to the New Hampshire State Senate’s 12-12 vote and decision today to table the death penalty repeal bill, Amnesty International USA Executive Director Steven W. Hawkins issued the following statement:
"We are disappointed that instead of ending this barbaric and ineffective punishment that has no place in our justice system, the New Hampshire Senate vote was tied, 12-12. Now that the bill has been tabled, we urge New Hampshire Senators to take steps towards abolition. If New Hampshire does not end capital punishment, it will only contribute to helping the United States continue to hold its position as one of the top five executioners in the world, right up there with Iran, China, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.”
Amnesty International campaigns to abolish the death penalty throughout the country and around the world.
