Amnesty International Activists Will Join Member of Congress to Demand End to Sudan Atrocities at Protest Friday, March 16, at Sudan Embassy

(Washington, DC) — Amnesty International and other organizations will join Rep.Jim  McGovern, D-MA, at a demonstration on Friday morning, March 16 to protest Sudan's ongoing human rights violations against the people of South Kordofan and Blue Niles states.  

Protesters will gather at 9:30 a.m. at Sheridan Circle for a rally, then march to the nearby Sudanese embassy at 2210 Massachusetts Avenue Northwest, to continue the protest, with speakers including  Rep. McGovern and others.

Amnesty International is calling for an end to indiscriminate bombings, immediate access to food and humanitarian aid, and for the arrest of President Omar Bashir and other officials to face charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide before the International Criminal Court.

In addition to Rep. McGovern, co-chair of the Lantos Human Rights Commission in the House of Representatives, speakers will include Martin Luther King III, and representatives of United To End Genocide and the Enough Project.

Scott Edwards, Amnesty International USA Director for Tactical Response, will be available for analysis and commentary about  the ongoing situation in South Sudan and the transitional regions, including the impending famine that nearly half a million people now face as a direct result of Sudanese government actions.

Actor George Clooney testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday about his recent trip to Sudan. Clooney mentioned Friday's demonstration in an interview with MSNBC. He was scheduled to meet with President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the crisis.
