Penelope Halkiadakis
Penelope Halkiadakis (she/her) is a MD/MPH candidate at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.
On the AIUSA Board of Directors, she previously served as a member of the Executive Committee (2021-2024), Member-at-Large (2021-2022), and two-term Vice Chair from 2022 – 2024. As Vice Chair, she led the Board Governance Committee, where she brought forward governance reforms including reimagining the Board nominating process and spearheading data-driven initiatives to address declining voting participation among AIUSA members.
As an active member of AIUSA since 2012, Penelope has served in various member leadership roles including co-founding the AIUSA Youth Collective, serving as a Student Activist Coordinator, and representing our section as a 2019 delegate to the Amnesty International Youth Summit in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Beyond her work with Amnesty International USA, Penelope is a published researcher in orthopedics and trauma surgery. At Case Western, she is a proud member of the Latino Medical Student Association. She previously interned with the Community Justice Action Fund, where she analyzed the disproportionate impact of gun violence on black and brown communities, contributing to the creation of the 2023 Violence Prevention Index. Penelope earned a Bachelor of Science with High Honors with a major in Biology, minors in Medical Humanities and Science, Technology, & Society, and graduate certificate in Healthcare Management & Leadership from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey.
