Nominating Committee Open Positions

About the Committee

Each year, the Nominating Committee creates and recommends the candidate slate for the Board of Directors general membership election to fill vacant board seats. The Nominating Committee is responsible for reviewing applications, interviewing applicants and their references, and ultimately determining the candidate slate through a rigorous vetting process.

Benefits of Serving

The Nominating Committee is an opportunity to learn about and be directly involved in the governance of AIUSA. The decisions made by this committee make a tremendous impact on the future of the organization. It is rewarding work with excellent colleagues who are committed to Amnesty’s mission and identifying capable leaders to serve on the Board.

Meeting candidates from a variety of backgrounds is enriching and satisfying on its own. Getting to know individuals who are already leading in our movement and eventually elected to the Board helps build our people power and makes Amnesty stronger. NomCom members often have extensive experience in activism, governance, and organizational leadership. Members also frequently move on to serve in other member leader positions, including on the Board.

Committee Roles and Responsibilities

AIUSA’s Board of Directors consists of AIUSA members who are elected by the larger membership. The Nominating Committee plays an important role in supporting the Board in the election process. As a member of the committee, you help to identify, review, and recommend a diverse group of potential candidates who are interested in running for the Board.

The Nominating Committee also oversees the election of Board officers and makes recommendations for new Nominating Committee members.

Members must be prepared to devote a significant amount of time to committee work throughout the year, with the heaviest workload in the fall, during the Board recruitment cycle. The average weekly time commitment during this period can be approximately 8-10 hours per week. The committee typically meets once a month, virtually, as well as in person over a weekend in November to determine a slate to present to the Board of Directors. NomCom members also typically attend AGM in the spring to participate in governance activities and kickstart its own recruitment cycle. Please see the committee’s complete Terms of Reference.
