Know Your Rights: How to Stay Safe Around ICE

Knowing your rights when encountering U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) keeps our communities safe.

1. DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR TO ICE

Only open the door if they have a judicial warrant from a judge and ask them to slide it under the door. This goes for homes, restaurants, schools, places of worship, and any private space.

2. REMAIN SILENT

You have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions.

3. DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING

Unless you have first talked to a lawyer, you should not sign anything.

4. DO NOT FALL FOR THE TRICKS

ICE is known for using tricks and ruses to get people to let them inside their home, to disclose information, or coerce people to come outside to be arrested.

5. DON’T CARRY FOREIGN IDs

Foreign identification docs, like a foreign passport, could be used against you

6. CARRY IMPORTANT IMMIGRATION DOCUMENTS

If you have been in the United States for more than 2 years, carry evidence of that. If you have any kind of lawful status in the U.S., carry paperwork that proves it.

7. SHOUT YOUR RIGHT TO SEEK ASYLUM

If you are arrested by ICE and you have a fear of returning to your country, shout it loudly every chance you have.
