Amnesty International Welcomes Odaini’s Release but Asks What About the Others Who Have Been Cleared?
June 29, 2010
"Amnesty International welcomes the news that the U.S. government has decided to repatriate Mohammed al-Odaini back to his home in Yemen. We urge the government to immediately release the others held in Guantanamo or to charge and try them in accordance with international law."
"Mohammed al-Odaini has been held without charge by the U.S. government for more than 8 years, since the age of 18. He was cleared for release in 2005, but the U.S. government continued to detain him. Mr. al-Odaini has a right to remedy for the time he spent unlawfully detained in U.S. custody."
"For years, Amnesty International members have taken action for al-Odaini and other detainees–writing countless letters and emails, holding vigils and demonstrations, organizing film screenings, meeting with elected officials and gathering petition signatures."
