In response to today’s Supreme Court decision in U.S. v. Skrmetti, Karla Gonzales Garcia, Gender, Sexuality and Identity Director with Amnesty International USA said:
“Today’s ruling in U.S. v. Skrmetti is a devastating setback for the human rights, dignity, and safety of transgender people across the United States.
“Health care is a human right. Denying transgender adolescents access to medically necessary care is discriminatory and punishes them simply for being who they are. Medical care for transgender youth is endorsed as essential treatment for those who need it by every major medical, pediatric, and psychological association in the U.S. Simply put, banning access to critical medical care endangers lives. Trans people have a human right to, and must have, the same access to care, protection, and autonomy as everybody else.
“We are united in solidarity with every family, every young person, and every trans adult whose future feels less certain today. Individuals and organizations working for human rights and equality for transgender people are lighting the way to a better future. Together, we will continue to work towards the day that transgender people fully enjoy their right to live freely, safely, and authentically.”
