In support of the Reparations Now Resolution, recognizing that the United States has a moral and legal obligation to provide reparations for the crime of enslavement of Africans and its lasting harm on the lives of millions of Black people in the United States, Terrance Sullivan, Director of Racial Justice for Amnesty International USA said:
“Thank you to Congressperson Summer Lee for introducing a Resolution recognizing the moral and legal obligation of the U.S. government to provide reparations for the crime of slavery and its lasting harms on the lives of millions of Black people in this country.
“Amnesty International USA strongly supports this resolution. It is a necessary step forward for the U.S. government to acknowledge and apologize for the state-sanctioned institution of slavery that it profited from and the systemic racism that continues to shape our laws, institutions and practices.
“The legacy of slavery continues today, causing psychological, political, cultural and economic harm that only intentional reparative healing can address. This country’s ongoing racial wealth gap is a direct result of slavery and generations of economic theft and exclusion. Reparations are not only about financial redress; they are about justice, truth, and a national reckoning with the moral debts owed to Black communities.
“Reparations are a human rights issue. They are a tool to confront the truth, repair the harm, and build a future where justice and equality for Black people in the U.S. are more than a broken promise.
“We call on all members of Congress to join this resolution. It is an urgent step toward addressing historical wrongs and advancing racial justice and human rights.”
