(Los Angeles) — On Friday, Dec. 9 to celebrate Human Rights Day, Amnesty International will host Pharrell Williams, the award-winning recording artist, producer and human rights supporter, who will join 1,200 students and teachers participating in Amnesty's global "Write for Rights" event at Roosevelt High School in East Los Angeles. Williams will kick off a special online contest to remix or "re-jam" Amnesty's 50th anniversary anthem newly composed by Academy and Grammy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer and film score collaborator Lorne Balfe.

Titled "One More Voice 4 #Human Rights," the Los Angeles event — one of the largest "Write for Rights" events in the world — starts at 12:30 p.m. PST.

Pharrell  will speak to students and teachers about the contest, which carries a $1,000 first prize, as well as the importance of activism to achieve social justice.

He will then kick off the contest to "re-jam" Amnesty's anthem, "One More Voice for Freedom," which was launched this week.

Students will participate in spoken word performances and real-time art installations inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At the end of the performances students and teachers will take action in solidarity with the 15 "Prisoners of Conscience," profiled in this year's "Write for Rights" series.

The event comes one day before International Human Rights Day, which marks the United Nations' passage of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Amnesty International anthem in honor of its 50th anniversary, "One More Voice for Freedom," can be remixed in the contest sponsored by UJam, the online music creation platform, at:  http://www.ujam.com/amnesty

"Write for Rights" is the world's biggest human rights event, this year taking place Dec. 3-11. People all over the world send letters, emails and faxes to help free people who are unjustly imprisoned because of their beliefs, writings, gender, sexual orientation, race or ethnicity. Many are held without charge or trial and are at risk of torture or execution, or have been tortured. They include Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, imprisoned in China for his political writings and activism.  For more information or to participate, please visit: https://www.amnestyusa.org/writeathon
