Amnesty International Mobilizes Members for National Week of Resistance Against Muslim Ban

May 8, 2017

This week Amnesty International is mobilizing its 1.2 million members and supporters in the U.S. to join with the American Civil Liberties Union, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, National Immigration Law Center and others to take action opposing the Muslim ban for the National Week of Resistance. Activists will rally outside of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, VA on May 8 as well as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Seattle, WA on May 15. Throughout the week, activists will be contacting their members of Congress to demand they override the ban.

Supporters are also invited to join Twitter Town Halls on May 8 and May 15 at 3 pm EST using the hashtag #NoMuslimBanEver. Other events are planned around the country.

“President Trump’s attempt to write bigotry into law has been met with resistance every step of the way,” said Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA. “People across the country and the world have made it clear from day one of the ban that they will raise their voices against this discriminatory agenda. No matter how many times the Trump administration recklessly defends the ban, the people will refuse to allow it to stand. Together, we will send a loud and clear message to the Trump administration: there will be no Muslim ban, ever.”

Amnesty International’s “I Welcome” campaign protects the rights of refugees and people seeking asylum by documenting human rights abuses and pressing governments to do their fair share to address this humanitarian crisis. In the U.S., Amnesty International is working to protect refugee resettlement programs and access to asylum at the U.S southern border.
