Detained Student Activist Released!
On 19 April the lower house of Mexican congress approved their version of the General Law on Torture and sent it back to the Senate for final approval before it becomes law. This final version is an improvement of the earlier draft, and all of the four regressive articles Amnesty International was concerned about have been improved upon.
Indonesian police suspended their investigation into a defamation complaint against human rights activist Haris Azhar. An investigation is currently underway into his allegations linking security and law enforcement officials to drug-trafficking.
George Ramzi Nakhla, a member of the "6 April Youth" protest movement, was released on 25 March 2012 after being detained and beaten by Egyptian security forces.
Syrian student Suhaib al-Ammar was released without charge on 10 January 2012, following his arrest by Syrian Air Force Intelligence officials on 18 November 2011.
