Great News! Chinese Human Rights Activist Wang Lihong Released

Wang Lihong, a widely-known human rights activist, was released from prison on 20 December after having served her sentence. She is now staying in the suburbs of Beijing, China.

Wang Lihong was taken from her home by the police on 21 March as part of a wave of detentions sparked by the Jasmine protests in the Middle East and North Africa. Police searched her home and confiscated her personal computer. On 21 April, Beijing Chaoyang District Police told her family she had been formally arrested and was detained at Beijing Chaoyang District Police Detention Center. Wang Lihong’s trial was held on 12 August. The presiding judge at Beijing Chaoyang District People’s Court announced Wang Lihong’s nine month prison sentence the morning of 9 September.

Amnesty International will continue to closely monitor her situation and will take further action as appropriate.
