(Washington D.C.) — Following the U.S. Senate's passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Adotei Akwei, managing director of government relations for Amnesty International USA, issued the following statement: "The passage of the NDAA is a huge setback for U.S. justice and the global promotion and protection of human rights. "Premised on the concept that the United States is now a battleground on which the law of war applies, this bill would establish a dangerous double standard in which equality before the law – a bedrock principle – only applies to some and not others. "Lawmakers have found a problem where none existed and have proposed a fix that will do yet further damage to the United States' battered reputation around the world.

"Instead of allowing Congress to double down on the debacle that is Guantanamo, President Obama must move now to veto this desperately wrong-headed initiative."

More than 25,000 Amnesty International members urged their U.S. Senators to reject the NDAA.
