What is Amnesty International's Urgent Action Program?
The Urgent Action (UA) Program is the "emergency room" of Amnesty International.
When someone needs protection from a harmful human rights violation that requires immediate attention, the London headquarters of A.I. issues an Urgent Action casesheet: a short report that is sent to thousands of A.I. Urgent Action Program members around the world This Urgent Action gives them information about an individual or group of individuals who need help.
When Amnesty's UA Program members receive their Urgent Actions, they start writing letters, emails, and faxes. Within days, and sometimes within hours, hundreds of letters start piling up on the desks of government officials. These letters ask the officials to take notice of the human rights violations and stop them.
