Media Conference Friday, May 31 on Arms Trade Treaty and Why Obama Must Be Among the First Signers

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – As the Arms Trade Treaty opens for signature on June 3rd, Amnesty International USA, Arms Control Association, Oxfam America, and the Simson Center will host a press breakfast on Friday, May 31st at 9 a.m. at Old Ebbitt Grill to discuss why the United States must be one of the first signatories. Journalists may also participate by conference call. Panelists will discuss why the treaty is important for countries such as South Sudan; what the treaty does and doesn’t do; and next steps.

Adotei Akwei, managing director for government relations and Africa advocacy director at Amnesty International USA, will moderate the panel. Prior to his current role, Akwei was senior policy advisor for CARE USA and regional advocacy advisor for CARE’s Asia Regional Management Unit. Before joining CARE, Akwei was AIUSA’s deputy director for Africa advocacy and served as Africa program director for the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (now Human Rights First).
