Standing Rock

Standing Rock

The Trump administration’s decision to approve the Dakota Access Pipeline without conducting a full Environmental Impact Statement review or seeking the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s free prior and informed consent is a violation of human rights. Amnesty International is also deeply concerned that the U.S. government has used excessive, militarized force against peaceful water protectors. Amnesty International calls on the US government to respect, protect and fulfill the human rights of Indigenous Peoples, including by halting the pipeline and conducting a full Environmental Impact Statement review; seeking their free, prior and informed consent for construction now and on future projects; respecting the right to peaceful protest; and conducting an independent, Department of Justice investigation into allegations of excessive force by authorities against people opposed to the pipeline.
