Ending Violence Against Women
To commemorate Human Rights Day the Northeast Regional Office working with Physicians for Human Rights and the Reebok Human Rights Program helped to assemble a coalition of nearly 40 local organizations: women's service organizations, rape crisis centers, and domestic violence treatment centers. Connie Chow, who is active on the AIUSA Women's Rights Steering Committee and Eric Aronson, our Regional Refugee Coordinator, were also active in the planning process for several months.
Eve Ensler, the author of The Vagina Monologues, gave a keynote presentation, with new material. Her presentation was followed by a panel discussion with local and international voices.
Other participants included Taslima Nasrin, the famous writer from Bangladesh who was forced to flee to Scandinavia by Muslim fundamentalists; Dr. Nawal Nour, who has established the African Women's Health Clinic at Brigham and Women's Hospital; Specioza Kazibwe, a former vice president of Uganda, who publicly denounced her former ex-husband for beating her; and Mary Harvey, who leads a prominent program called Victims of Violence at a hospital in Cambridge, Mass all participated in the panel discussion.
