Human Rights Week will start with Amnesty’s 3rd Annual Human Rights Film Festival showing Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at 7:15 p.m., at Rosendale Theater (408 Main St., Rosendale, NY 12472) (suggested donation).
Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide is a documentary film inspired by the widely acclaimed book of the same name by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. We will show segments on gender based-violence, sex trafficking and forced prostitution. The series follows Nicholas Kristof and celebrity activists Eva Mendes and Meg Ryan on a journey to tell the stories of inspiring, courageous individuals. Across the globe oppression is being confronted, and real meaningful solutions are being fashioned through health care, education, and economic empowerment for women and girls. In order to continue combatting these problems, the Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter of Amnesty has been actively working to make an International Violence Against Women Act a reality in US Congress.
Human Rights Week will end with a benefit dance party for the Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter of Amnesty International on Friday, December 6, 2013, at 8:00 p.m., at Rosendale Café. Michael Wilcock, a DJ of Dave Leonard's JTD Productions, will be spinning a mix of funk, soul, top 40 and classics to get all the different bodies grooving. Also a musician and musicologist, Michael steers his DJ sets through a dancing journey with plenty of soul and fun surprises! 100% of the $10 door donations will go to the Mid-Hudson Amnesty International Chapter.
These events will also include letter writing opportunities for participants as a part of the Amnesty International’s Global Write for Rights event.
