Tunisia: Quash Conviction of Six Men

Six men jailed for “sodomy” were released on bail on 7 January pending their appeal. They were arrested on 2 December at a party in the city of Kairouan and sentenced to three years in prison on 10 December, under Article 230 of the Tunisian Penal Code. Their appeal is set for 25 February.

Some said they were beaten at the police station. A lawyer defending them stated that the signs of the beatings were still clear and that one of them had a broken nose. The men also described being forced to undergo an anal examination against their will, which amounts to torture.

The lawyer also told Amnesty International the men have been threatened since their release, and are too afraid to go outside.
