Criminal Justice Advocate

Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is seeking a qualified volunteer leader to serve as a Criminal Justice Advocate in their state. The primary role of this volunteer is to serve as local coordinator for Amnesty’s work on police use of force and death penalty abolition advocacy in their state.

This professionalized volunteer position is a great opportunity for passionate leaders to build upon their skills, connect with other activists and make a difference. This is an ideal role for students or recent graduates committed to criminal justice in their state.

 

Responsibilities

  • Keep AI groups, volunteer leaders, and staff informed of police use of force and death penalty news in your state including upcoming executions and relevant legislation
  • Follow scheduled executions in your state and advocate for activists to take action
  • Coordinate and inspire Amnesty activists to engage in grassroots legislative advocacy  on criminal justice issues, including meeting with legislators and other decision-makers
  • Serve as Amnesty’s local representative in state criminal justice coalitions and forge strategic alliances with other criminal justice organizations
  • Work collaboratively with Amnesty members, staff and other volunteer leaders on state strategies to elevate criminal justice issues and strengthen the organization’s capacity

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with grassroots organizing and coalition building
  • Familiarity with criminal justice issues in your state
  • An understanding of racial justice and its relation to criminal justice
  • Experience with racial justice work
  • Familiarity with human rights standards 
  • Research experience 
  • Comfortability speaking out on criminal justice issues in front of public audience

 

Required Qualifications

  • Willing to serve in this role for 2 years, with a 3 hr./week commitment
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Engaged and responsive
  • Based in Georgia or Kentucky
