Tarah Demant

Tarah Demant is the National Director of Programs at Amnesty International USA, where she manages the organization’s thematic work. She brings over twenty years of experience in human rights work, with an emphasis on global gender issues.

Before becoming National Director, she headed the organization’s work on women’s rights, LGBTQI+ rights, Indigenous peoples’ rights, and sexual and reproductive rights, and she was previously a professor of women, gender, and sexuality studies and English. Her research and analysis has been featured by The New York Times, CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, Time, USA Today, NPR, The Nation, and other media. She holds a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis.
