Amnesty International condemns the reports of mass killings that occurred between December 6 and 7 in the Wharf Jérémie neighborhood in Cité Soleil; the gang attack resulted in the deaths of 180 people, reported the Haitian prime minister’s office.

“We are urging the Haitian authorities and the international community to redouble their efforts to protect the population in the context of the security crisis. Those responsible for the massacres and other grave violations of international human rights law must be identified as soon as possible and brought before the courts to answer for their actions” stated Ana Piquer, Americas director at Amnesty International. “The people across Haiti deserve to live free from fear and gang-related violence. We are concerned that further killings are likely unless immediate steps are taken to prevent their recurrence. The international community must urgently do more to support Haitian authorities in their obligation to protect civilians and ensure justice for these heinous crimes.”

Amnesty International is also calling on all gangs in Haiti to put a halt to the attacks on the population immediately.
