List of Amnesty-verified attacks in Ukraine*

Below is a list of attacks by Russian forces in Ukraine which Amnesty International has verified to date. Some of theseincluding extrajudicial killings, strikes on hospitals and schools, indiscriminate attacks which killed or injured civilians, and the use of banned cluster munitionsmay constitute war crimes under international law.

  • Jul. 29: An explosion in an Olenivka prison killed more than 50 Ukrainian POWs held by Russian-backed forces.
  • Jul. 1: Russian forces struck an apartment block and a hotel in Serhiivka with Kh-22 anti-ship missiles, killing at least 21 civilians.
  • July: Russian forces struck an agricultural warehouse near Mykolaiv, injuring a civilian.
  • Jun. 28: A child and an older woman were killed in a Russian rocket attack on their home near Odesa.
  • Jun. 10: A Russian rocket attack killed a civilian man near Mykolaiv.
  • May 21: A Russian strike hit a university building in Bakhmut, killing seven soldiers and damaging nearby residential buildings.
  • May 18:  A Russian missile struck a residential building and partially destroyed five apartments in Bakhmut.
  • May 6: Russian forces used cluster munitions over a residential neighborhood in Donbas.
  • Apr. 30: A Russian rocket struck an apartment building in Kharkiv, setting it on fire and severely injuring a resident.
  • Apr. 28: A Russian air strike injured two civilians at a medical laboratory in Kharkiv.
  • Apr. 28: Cluster munitions carried by an Uragan rocket struck a graveyard in Kharkiv, killing one civilian and injuring at least four.
  • Apr. 26: A series of cluster submunition explosions killed three civilians and injured at least six in Kharkiv.
  • Apr. 23: A volley of Grad rockets struck a housing complex in Kharkiv, killing and injuring several people.
  • Apr. 19: Shelling killed a civilian man in front of his sister’s apartment building in Kharkiv.
  • Apr. 15: Russian forces rained down cluster munitions near a playground in Kharkiv, killing 9 civilians and injuring dozens.
  • Apr. 12: A rocket strike injured two civilians in their apartment building in Kharkiv.
  • Apr. 10: At least two men were killed in their homes and several others injured when a series of cluster munitions exploded in Kharkiv.
  • Apr. 7: A civilian woman was found dead with signs of torture in a house occupied by Russian soldiers in Bucha.
  • Apr. 3: Seven civilians were killed and more than 30 injured when a series of cluster munitions exploded in Kharkiv.
  • Mar. 31: Two civilian men were found dead in the basement of their apartment building in Bucha after Russian soldiers detained, tortured, and shot them.
  • Mar. 29: A civilian man was killed when shelling hit his house in Kharkiv.
  • Mar. 25: Russian soldiers executed a civilian man outside of his house in Bucha.
  • Mar. 24: A 20mm Uragan rocket carrying cluster munitions struck a crowded parking lot near a humanitarian aid queue in Kharkiv, killing at least six people and injuring 15.
  • Mar. 22 or 23: A civilian man died in his apartment stairwell after Russian soldiers shot and threw a grenade at him.
  • Mar. 19: Russian soldiers shot and killed a civilian man outside of his apartment building in Bucha.
  • Mar. 16: Russian fighter aircraft destroyed a theater where civilians were sheltering in Mariupol, killing at least a dozen people.
  • Mar. 16: Shelling killed a civilian man near his home in Kharkiv, injuring another.
  • Mar. 15: Rocket strikes hit and destroyed five neighboring houses in Kharkiv, killing a civilian man.
  • Mar. 13 – Apr. 13: Russian forces carried out a series of strikes on and around eight buildings in Kharkiv, using PTM-1S munitions which combine the worst attributes of cluster munitions and of anti-personnel land mines. More than a dozen people were killed and more than 30 injured.
  • Mar. 13: A civilian man was abducted by Russian forces and later found shot in the head.
  • Mar. 12: Russian forces fired upon a convoy of fleeing civilians at a checkpoint between Lypivka and Khorolivka, killing two civilians and injuring a child.
  • Mar. 12: A Grad rocket struck a playground in Kharkiv, killing and injuring several people.
  • Mar. 2: Russian soldiers shot and killed a civilian man near his apartment building in Bucha.
  • Mar. 9: Russian soldiers executed a civilian man in a village outside of Kyiv before raping his wife at gunpoint.
  • Mar. 9: Russian soldiers executed a civilian man in his home in Bohdanivka.
  • Mar. 6: Villagers discovered the bodies of five civilians who had been executed in Novyi Korohod.  
  • Mar. 6: Two attacks killed at least four civilians, including two children, at an evacuation crossing point in Irpin.
  • Mar. 5: Russian soldiers held a family at gunpoint before killing one civilian and setting fire to their house in Bucha.
  • Mar. 4 or 5: Russian soldiers shot and killed a civilian man outside of his apartment building in Bucha.
  • Mar. 4: Russian soldiers shot and killed a civilian man in his apartment in Bucha, with black-tipped 7N12 armor-piercing 9x39mm rounds used by elite units.
  • Mar. 4: A cluster bomb killed one civilian in Kharkiv.
  • Mar. 3: Russian forces arrested a civilian man who they later beat and shot dead.
  • Mar. 3: A “dumb bomb” killed 47 civilians in Chernihiv.
  • Mar. 3: Russian soldiers shot and killed a boy and her aunt outside of a basement where they were sheltering in Vorzel.
  • Mar. 3: Russian soldiers executed a civilian couple outside their home in Vorzel.
  • Mar. 3: Russian gunfire killed in Hostomel two civilians including the city’s mayor.
  • Mar. 1-2: Russian air strikes hit eight residential buildings in Borodyanka, killing at least 40 residents including children.
  • Mar. 1: Multiple strikes by Russian forces killed seven civilians and injured dozens more in Kharkiv.
  • March: Villagers found the bodies of two men who had been tied up and shot in the head in Babintsi.
  • March: Extensive bombardment on civilian structures killed at least eight civilians in Izium, including two children.
  • Feb. 28 or Mar. 1: A Grad rocket destroyed a house in Kharkiv. The following day, another rocket struck the yard of a church across the street.
  • Feb. 28: Three Smerch rocket attacks killed at least five civilians in Kharkiv.
  • Feb. 27 – Mar. 3: Shelling in Kharkiv killed at least eight civilians and injured at least four.
  • Feb. 27: Russian forces sprayed a house in Bucha with bullets as they drove by, killing a civilian woman.
  • Feb. 26: An explosive weapon hit a kindergarten in Chernihiv, starting a fire.
  • Feb. 25: A missile damaged a school in Mariupol.
  • Feb. 25: An Uragan rocket hit a preschool in Okhtyrka, killing three people, including a child.
  • Feb. 24: A strike near a restaurant in Uman killed a civilian.
  • Feb. 24: A ballistic missile struck a hospital in Vuhledar, killing four civilians and wounding ten more.
  • Feb. 24: A large missile or rocket struck a residential block in Kharkiv, killing at least one civilian and injuring two.
  • Feb. 17: Russian-backed forces struck a kindergarten in Stanytsia Luhanska, wounding three civilians.
  • February: A civilian woman was shot and killed while looking over her fence at a Russian military vehicle in Bucha.
