Hollywood tackles "Extraordinary Renditions"
![]() | The film “Rendition,” opening this month, is a graphic portrayal of what can happen when human rights are sacrificed in the name of national security. With its nation-wide release, people across the country will begin to understand the multiple human rights violations surrounding the practice of “extraordinary renditions,” which is the extralegal transfer of a person into the custody of a country where they face torture and other human rights violations. The film centers around the story of Anwar El-Ibrahimi, an Egyptian-born US resident who "disappears" on a flight from South Africa to Washington D.C. His American wife and a CIA analyst then find themselves caught up in a struggle to secure his release from a secret detention facility somewhere outside the United States. |
It is a plot that reflects the reality of the US “extraordinary renditions” program, and its effect on the individuals and families involved. Actors Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep, Peter Sarsgaard, Alan Arkin and Omar Metwally star in this poignant thriller that could have been ripped from today's headlines.
