Gary Tyler, an African-American man, is serving a life sentence without chance of parole in Louisiana. With coerced witness testimony and without any physical evidence, he was convicted by an all-white jury for the 1974 murder of 13-year-old Timothy Weber, a white student who was shot during intense racial clashes in Destrehan, Louisiana. Tyler, who was 16 at the time of the incident, has consistently denied involvement in the crime.

For between 28 and 35 years, Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox have each been confined alone to a small cell for 23 hours a day. No other living prisoner in the United States is believed to have spent so long in solitary confinement. Particularly disturbing is evidence that their long-term isolation may be at least partly based on their past political activism in prison. This harsh, prolonged isolation breaches the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention against Torture. Amnesty International is calling on prison authorities to remove Wallace and Woodfox from solitary confinement.
