"Call for Justice Weekend," Stop U.S. Involvement in Torture
Washington D.C., Sept. 24th - 26th, 2005

You are invited to attend the “Call for Justice Weekend”, to stop U.S. involvement in torture. The event is presented by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and its Interfaith Steering Committee and is being co-sponsored by Amnesty International USA.

Please join us! Planned activities include:

Saturday Sept. 24th: Educational workshops and panel discussions on the history, legal considerations, and security consequences of U.S. involvement in torture. Also discussions of appropriate reform measures, and inter-faith presentations on the moral and spiritual issues. The workshops will be scheduled to accommodate those attending the United For Peace and Justice march that day.

Sunday Sept. 25th: Citizens’ Trial” of Mr. Rumsfeld, Mr. Gonzales and Mr. Tenet for violations of international and U.S. laws prohibiting torture. This trial will be based on actual laws and evidence, and use real lawyers, and real testimonies given by Iraqi and Afghan survivors. We will also offer torture survivors from Latin America and other regions who suffered very similar torture practices at the hands of U.S. officials. An intelligence expert will testify that torture does not work, and instead creates backlash.

Monday September 26th: We will open with a final inter-faith presentation, then send all of our attendees to Congress and other government offices to insist that all forms of this practice be abolished.

Please join us for “Call for Justice Weekend” and be sure to register here. If you have questions or need further assistance, please contact Jennifer Harbury or Nadya Khalife at the UUSC office, 617-868-6600, or toll free 800.388.3920 or by e-mail at stoptorture@uusc.org.

Nationwide, September 26th - 30th

Tell Your Member of Congress To Denounce Torture!

From September 26th - 30th, Amnesty International USA will join forces with other organizations to sponsor a special week of lobbying Congressional district offices. We aim to have Congressional district office delegations in every state across the country. Our message will be simple and clear: Congress should immediately establish a fully independent commission to publicly investigate all allegations of torture and ill-treatment in U.S. detention centers around the world.

Your help is needed to ensure our Congressional district office lobby week is a success! Join now.
