We Did It! A Victory for VAWA
Women’s rights activist Souad al-Shammari was released on 29 January after three months of detention without charge. The conditions of her release and current legal status are unclear.
One of the two Papuan students tortured or otherwise ill-treated by police has been
released. The other is still in detention and has been charged for his peaceful political
activism in Indonesia’s West Papua province.
Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen was released on June 5 at the end of his six year sentence for “inciting separatism.” Amnesty International supporters have campaigned untiringly for his freedom.
Amnesty International welcomed the release last week of prominent Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh. She was a prisoner of conscience and the subject of sustained activism by Amnesty International members and partners since her arrest in 2010.
