Nigerian Torture Survivor Freed!
Syrian refugee Fadi Mansour finally reunited with his family in Melbourne, Australia, on 11 June. He had been held in the Adana Removal Centre in south-eastern Turkey since 19 March, after he was arbitrarily detained for more than one year in inhumane conditions in Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport.
Seven of the 12 Syrian refugees detained in Düziçi camp, Osmaniye province, in southern Turkey, were released on 20 May. The other five, a woman and her four children, requested to be voluntarily returned to Syria and were taken to the Syrian border on 19 May.
Turkish academics Muzaffer Kaya, Esra Mungan, Kıvanç Ersoy and Meral Camcı were released from pre-trial detention on 22 April. The prosecution against them for ‘‘making propaganda for a terrorist organisation’’ following their support to a peace appeal has stopped but they have not been acquitted.
Syrian refugee M.K., who had been arbitrarily detained at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen airport since 9 November 2015, was released on 29 March. He is required to go to the central Anatolian province of Aksaray to await a decision on his international protection application. He will not be detained while awaiting the decision.
