We Did It! A Victory for VAWA
Five women rights activists detained after planning events to mark International Women’s Day were released on bail on 13 April. This follows a huge outcry about their detention both in China and internationally, which it is believed played a major role in their release.
Human rights activists Jaison C Cooper and Thushar Nirmal Sarathy were released on bail on 16 March, after being arrested on suspicion of being involved in unlawful activities because they had ‘proMaoist’ materials in their homes. Amnesty International’s campaign for them was highlighted in several media reports in India, and may have contributed to raising awareness about their arbitrary detention.
Human rights defender and journalist Gerard Kuissu was released from custody on the night of 17 March, after Amnesty International issued an urgent action and met with the Colonel in charge of his detention. The case was also covered by local and international media.
Turkish citizen of Palestinian origin, Dr Amer al-Shawa, was released from detention on 13 February after 135 days of enforced disappearance. He was deported to Turkey.
